Sophiko Akhobadze works at Regional Environmental Center for the Caucasus as a Director and is specialized in international environmental policy and development cooperation.
The Regional Environmental Center (REC) for the Caucasus (https://www.rec-caucasus.org/) is an non-profit organization, with headquarters in Tbilisi, Georgia and country offices in Yerevan, Armenia and Baku, Azerbaijan. In the context of RECC’s long-term commitment to promote sustainable land management, topic area activities focus on Policy Formulation, Capacity Development, Communication and Information Dissemination in the region of South Caucasus, Eastern Europe and beyond.
Sophiko Akhobadze has a thorough understanding of UNCCD, UNFCCC and other environmental policy trends in South Caucasus and Eastern Europe and a proven track record of successful contacts with governmental, non-govermental, inter-governmental, bilateral and multilateral donor organizations —such as EU, WB, UNEP, UNDP, UNIDO, OSCE, FAO, GIZ, KFW, USAID, WWF, governments of Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Liechtenstein and Finland.
As the regional director of the Regional Environmental Center for the Caucasus, since 2009, she has provided strategic planning, programme/vision development, advance of networking between CBD, UNFCCC and UNCCD focal points and other key stakeholders, managing contacts, cooperating with partners, mentoring topic area leaders, etc.
From 2006-2012, Ms. Sophiko Akhobadze was member of standing committee of Ramsar convention representing European Region, she is member of GEF SCO forum and founder and member of board of directors of the Black Sea NGO network.
