Bhawani Shanker Kusum, presently working as secretary and executive director of a Non Government Organization named Gram Bharati Samiti (GBS means Society for Rural Development) based in Jaipur, India has been engaged in the field of combating desertification in India for past 30 years. Born in 1947 and a Master’s in sociology Bhawani Shanker Kusum has got many national/international awards and appreciations on his outstanding work in the field of developing wastelands to combat desertification. He served as NGO delegate for Asia Pacific in the UNAIDS and NGO observer in the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) Committee in the World Bank for two years ended in 2012
Bhawani has been associated with UNCCD since its inception and elected as vice president of RIOD India. His paper written in 2001 ‘A study on the process of desertification in Rajasthan through various gap regions in the Aravalli hill ranges’ was appreciated widely.
He organized number of state level workshops to introduce UNCCD in India, motivated over one hundred CSOs/NGOs working at grassroots level to join UNCCD and provided them with training on implementation of UNCCD in their areas.
